ARTEMIS Kick-off Meeting
On the 11th and 12th of February 2025, a new groundbreaking EU-funded project was launched: ARTEMIS.
ARTEMIS aims at creating a digital infrastructure to support the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage and which will exploit the potential of 3D visualization technologies.
The project is based on the novel concept of Reactive Heritage Digital Twins (RHDT): digital replicas of real objects which can elaborate specific reactions to diverse inputs, anticipating and thus avoiding the development of critical situations for the real object. RHDT will have a decisive impact on European Research Infrastructures working for the preservation of heritage.
ARTEMIS will combine data management, giving researchers and professionals the access to the knowledge stored in more than four million scientific and technical reports, with advanced visualization and simulation techniques, enabling virtual experiments without affecting the actual heritage assets.
This will allow simulation of any interventions (restoration, protection, …) before applying changes to the real items. Although the primary target is the scientific and professional community, the possibility of (e.g.) testing a restoration strategy in advance and visualizing its effects will also be important for decision makers.
Ultimately, the public at large will benefit as well from the cost reduction produced by the project and the improvement in preserving our precious heritage for future generations.
The project, which involves 22 partners from 12 EU countries and two important restoration centres as associates, is led by CNR-INO, an institute of the Italian National Research Council working on optical heritage diagnostics for more than 40 years.
ARTEMIS is a project funded by the European Commission under Grant Agreement n.101188009 – ARTEMIS. The views and opinions expressed in this website are the sole responsibility of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of the European Commission.
